DESCRIPTION
For those of us who do our own maintenance, here is the process for changing your engine oil and filter. PARTS NEEDED
1 – BMW Oil Filter Insert Kit
(CHAPMAN BMW $12.84 part #11 42 7 512 300)
7 – Quart AMSOil 10W-40 High Performance Engine Oil
(AMSOIL $5.70 part #AMO-QT)

TOOLS NEEDED
17mm & 36mm Sockets
Socket Wrench
Torque Wrench
Vehicle Lift or Ramps
Funnel (optional)
Towels (optional)

INSTALLATION
I chose to use AMSOil’s High Performance Oil, but you can use any high quality synthetic (Mobil 1/Castrol Syntec).

1. First, make sure the car’s engine has been run recently to warm the oil. Then, get the car on ramps or a lift and turn the engine off.

2. The oil filter housing is located at the very front top of the engine (Photo A).

3. Using a 36mm socket, loosen the oil filter housing cover (Photo B).

4. Slowly remove the cover. The filter is attached to the cover and will come out with it (Photo C).

5. Slide off the used filter element and discard. Remove the O-ring from the cover and discard. (Photo D).

6. The BMW Oil Filter Insert Kit should come with a new filter element, o-ring, and drain plug gasket (Photo E).

7. Lubricate the new O-ring with new, clean engine oil (Photo F).

8. Install new filter element and O-ring and return cover to engine (Photo G).

9. Tighten oil filter cover to 18ft/lbs torque. DO NOT over-tighten (Photo H).

10. Get under the car and locate the oil pan drain plug (Photo I).

11. Place a catch pan under the plug, then using a 17mm socket, remove the plug. BE CAREFUL – The oil can be hot and scald skin.

12. When the oil has completely drained from the engine (flow has slowed to an occasional drip), replace the drain plug using the new gasket from the kit and tighten to 18 ft/lbs of torque. DO NOT over-tighten. If you’re not careful, you can strip the oil pan and/or break off the drain plug. No fun!

13. Open the oil fill cap and add 6.5 quarts of synthetic engine oil. Use a funnel if you have one (Photo J).

14. Lower the car, look for oil leaks. If none, start the engine. If the oil pressure lamp does not go off in about 3 seconds, *immediately* turn off the engine and check your oil level (add more oil if necessary).

15. Let the engine run for a minute or so, then check the oil level. Shut off the engine. Pull out the dipstick. Wipe it off with a clean towel and reinsert the dipstick into the tube. Pull out again and look to see if the oil level is between the two notches in the dipstick (Photo K). If necessary, add a little more oil and check again, try not to overfill.

16. Check oil filter and drain plug for leaks one more time and, if none, you are good to go!

RESETTING OIL SERVICE INDICATOR:
If your OBC needs to be reset after completing your oil change, there are two ways. NOTE: If you miss a step, just turn the key back off and try again:

A. Model Year 1999 to Mid-2000: You should have the older round 20-pin DLC connector under your hood behind the battery terminal, you need to use a small length of wire to connect (short) pins 7 and 19 for 3-5 seconds with the ignition key in position 1 (Accessory).

B. After Mid-2000: You should not have the 20-pin DLC connector. You only need to hold the left odometer reset button while turning the key to position 1 (Accessory). Keep holding the button for 5 or so seconds until any of the following shows in the display: OIL SERVICE or INSPECTION with RESET or RE. Release the button and press it again for another 5 or so seconds until RESET or RE flash. While the display flashes, press the button one more time briefly. If done correctly, END SIA should show up for a few seconds. All done.

I went forward with my E90 alarm install, and took some pics along the way. I would say that it is an easy install, as long as you have some mechanical confidence and experience. The “hardest” part is removing the left rear wheel to install the siren. Since our cars do not come with a jack, you have to use your own (or buy the BMW jack), and there are special lift points that require a special fitting so as not to damage the lift point (nice work BMW). If you have any doubts about your ability to safely lift your car with a jack, do not attempt this install.

The E90 Factory Alarm kit from BMW (pn 66 12 0 403 658) lists for $300 but I got mine for about $229 from Circle BMW. They supplied the kit and printed out the offical BMW PDF instructions, which dealers have access to. Typically the kit does not include printed instructions since they obviously prefer the dealer to do the installation. The kit is pretty minimal, and kind of a crime that it costs so much and it not included with every car. It consists of an ultrasonic module for inside the vehicle, a hood switch, and a siren that goes up under the left rear wheel well.

See picture below:

1. Remove Negative Battery Terminal.

To get started, first disconnect the negative battery terminal. As you know, the battery is in the trunk (or “boot” for you English-English speakers). The nut on top of the negative (black) terminal is 10mm. I put the removed negative terminal on a rag so that it would not drop back on to the battery or touch the positive terminal.

2. Install Ultrasonic Module into interior of car.

To install the Ultrasonic Module, you must pop open the rear dome light fixture inside the cabin. Make sure you do the REAR one (aft of the sunroof). This was not specified in the instructions, and I spent about 1 hour figuring out that the front light fixture was not correct! To remove the rear dome light fixture, I used a plastic spatula as a pry tool so as not to damage the headliner or plastic. When you do this MAKE SURE your hands are very clean, as you will stain your headliner if they are not. (really, I am serious about this) The spot to pry is immediately behind each reading light, at the back edge of the fixture. There is a release tab immediately behind each circular light, and you have to get the pry tool in just the right place. I did one side, and then held it with my hand and did the other side. You should not have to use tremendous force if you get the pry tool in the right place. Don’t worry if the frosted clear light surround pops off when you do this, it easily snaps back in place later:

Once the tabs are released, I found it easiest to unplug the wiring harnesses to completely free the dome light fixture from the car. (This is not necessary, but it makes the next step easier). Then you simply put the ultrasonic module in place (it snaps in) and reinstall the dome light fixture into the car, taking care to connect the original wiring harness for the lights, and the previously unused one that snaps in to the awaiting ultrasonic module you just installed:

3. Installation of the Hood Switch

For the next step, open the hood (or “bonnet” for you English-English speakers) and locate the hood switch wiring along the drivers side edge of the engine compartment. It is taped to another batch of wires neatly. You will see a cap with 3 blue dots on the end, which is a termination for the harness that will eventually plug into the alarm hood switch.

CAREFULLY cut or unwrap the felt tape that holds the hood switch wires to the larger wiring bundle, and pull them up toward the windshield. You will need to remove the cover for the brake resevoir, and it is also easier if you remove the short weatherstripping piece and plastic braket that are shown in the pictures below:

These pieces pop right off easily, but use care when doing the brake resevoir cover. It has a clip at the front and back that you should release when removing.

Once these pieces are removed, straighten out the hood switch wiring, and you will notice 2 plastic clips that are used to mount the wiring to 2 plastic tabs in a channel near the hood switch mounting location. Simply push them down onto the tabs to mount them.

Next, mount the hood switch bracket. There is only one correct orientation of this bracket. The notch in the bracket goes toward the middle of the car and aft. Secure this with the provided screw:

Now, mount the hood switch into the bracket (it basically drops in) and connect the wiring harness to the switch. You must remove the “plug” that is in the connector first. In the pic, the plug is not yet removed.

3. Installation of the Siren in the wheel well

For the next step, you must jack up the vehicle and remove the left rear wheel. This is the “scariest” part of the install. If you have any doubts about doing this safely, do not perform this install. Apparently there is a special tool that fits into the plastic jacking points under the vehicle. They look like upside-down boxes. I just used a block of wood that I cut for this purpose that fit inside each “box” and protruded down below the lift point just far enough to prevent damage from my flat floor jack platform. I suggest buying the fitting or tool from BMW, though.

Before jacking I loosened the lugs slightly (17mm socket) to make it less scary when removing the wheel when lifted. Immediately after jacking the car up, I put 2 jackstands under 2 different parts of the rear suspension that appeared strong enough to support the weight of the car if the jack failed. Always assume your jack will fail! Since I had the lugs loosened slightly, I was able to easily able to remove the wheel once lifted.

Next you must remove the wheel arch cover, which is the felt lining inside the wheel well. This is pretty easy. There are about 10 nuts that must be removed, 10mm and 8 mm. Make sure you get them all. Then simply pull the felt liner out and set it aside.

Look up to the top of the wheel well. There is a cavity up there with some unused wiring, which is neatly tied up with felt tape, and 3 threaded studs. Undo the felt tape to release the connector. Place the supplied bracket over the exposed studs and secure it with the hex nuts. (10mm I think).

Next, connect the siren to the siren mount with the supplied nut.

Remove the “plug” from the connector in the wheel well, and plug the connector into the siren. There is a plastic grommet that pushes into the bracket to support the weight of the siren when it is not mounted. Make sure you push this into the bracket before letting the siren “hang”.

Then install the siren mount to the bracket with the supplied screws. Make sure that the wires are not pinched between the wheel well and the siren mount. Securely fasten these screws but do not overtighten. (Sorry, no picture here).

Finally, replace the felt wheel arch cover and the rear wheel. Make sure you get the cover tucked in to all the right places and make sure to replace ALL mounting screws. Torque specs for the rear wheel are between 120 and 140 Nm, which translates to about 90 lb/ft. Make sure to use a torque wrench and check the torque again after a short drive. Do not over or under torque!

If your car has had the proper software updates and programming, the alarm may function immediately after installation. Mine didn’t, and I have to go to my dealer and have the software updated to activate the alarm. If you have Nav, you can configure several parameters of the alarm. If you don’t have Nav, you may have to live with all features active. Consult your dealer for different configurations.

Enjoy!

On a side note, my dealer says he still can’t activate my alarm because he doesn’t have the software updates from BMW yet. LAME! If anyone else gets their alarm activated, please let me know.

Here’s how to remove the nice engine cover revealing the ugly messy engine below…

The screws on top of the cover are a ruse!! The cover simply lifts off. You just need to grab the front edge and pull it upwards then do the same at the back! You can now remove the cover. The cover is mounted by some little rubber doughnuts which sit on 4 metal nipples on the engine block.

To put the cover back on, slide it into place and push down to seat the doughnuts over the nipples (oo-er! ) lining the cover up by centring the oil filler cap with the hole in the cover! Done!!

Do you have a radar detector but don’t like how it looks sitting on your dash or visor? Maybe you live in a location where radar detectors are illegal? Well, here is a little write-up I did for a stealth install of my radar detector.

DISCLAIMER: This modification is to be followed and used at the sole risk of the individual performing it. When performing any modifications, there will always be the risk of damage to the car. MODIFY AT YOUR OWN RISK. Read the procedure carefully and be sure that you feel comfortable with the modification before you begin. Now on to the fun stuff!!

Garage Door Opener Remote: This is the original garage door opener remote. The garage door opener is made by Genie and this particular unit has the Intellicode code hopping security feature. Opening the remote was easy and involved removing a few screws on the back of the case.

Garage Door Opener Remote Circuit Board (Top): This is a shot of the actual circuit board inside the case of the remote. The center blue button is the one I tapped for use in the car. The wires you see are what I soldered to the circuit board and will be discussed in more detail later.

Garage Door Opener Remote Circuit Board (Bottom): This a bottom shot of the circuit board. Again, the wires I soldered to the circuit board will be discussed a little later.

Soldered Leads to New Switch: This is a close up of where I soldered the two wires for the push button switch that I used. Not the prettiest soldering job, but it works. The push button I used simply shorts the same contacts as the button on the remote. Be careful not to burn the circuit board when applying the solder.

Soldered Power Leads to Circuit Board: This is a close up of where I soldered the leads that would power the remote from the car. This is not necessary, since a battery would still work, but I did not want to pull the dash apart every time I needed to change a battery. This particular remote was a 12 volt remote. If you are trying this with a remote that requires 9 volts an added circuit will be required to provide the proper voltage from the car. Be sure to pay attention to the polarity of the leads. I also ended up using the battery terminals as wire guides for added support to the soldered power leads, an unexpected bonus!

Fog Light Switch Assembly: The location I mounted my new switch was just below the fog light button. This is a shot of the fog light switch assembly removed from the headlight switch/vent assembly (prior to the installation of the new garage door opener switch), it will pop out. The lower portion of the switch assembly is actually hollow and will be drilled to mount the new switch. Removal of the headlight switch/vent assembly is discussed a little later.

Fog Light Switch Assembly Taken Apart: This is a shot of the switch assembly taken apart prior to drilling. You will notice 4 tabs that hold the switch assembly together. Use a small, pointy object to slowly and carefully pry the switch apart. When it comes apart, there will be two tiny springs that will come out. Don’t lose these springs since they are required for the fog light switch to function properly. When putting the switch back together, re-insert the springs and carefully snap the assembly back together, verifying proper fog light switch mechanical operation.

Another Shot of the Fog Light Switch Assembly: Here is another shot of the fog light switch assembly taken apart to show where I will drill the hole to accept the new switch for the garage door opener. The top part is the existing fog light switch. The bottom is where I will be drilling the new hole. Notice the location of the two springs mentioned earlier. This is where they need to be prior to fog light switch re-assembly.

Switch Used for This Install: This is the switch I used for the install. It is a simple push button type switch. The cost was less than $2 from Radio Shack.

Fog Light Switch Assembly After Hole Was Drilled: This is a frontal view of the switch assembly after it was drilled. I used a Dremel Tool for this, slowly widening the hole. Be sure to take it slow and check for proper fit of the switch as you go along. You don’t want to make the hole too big for the new switch.

Circuit Board Inside the Dash: This is the circuit board installed inside the car (the area behind the headlight switch/vent). I used some velcro to keep it in place in there. To remove the headlight switch/vent assembly, there is a screw that is directly beneath it on the dash (you can’t miss it). Once the screw is out, gently pull the headlight switch/vent assembly out. Before you can pull the assembly out entirely, you need to disconnect the harness to the headlight switch (round) and the fog light switch (square, it is visible in this picture).

Routing of Switch Wires: On the fog light switch harness, there are two unused holes. Route the wires for the new switch through these holes as shown. The power lead (red) was spliced to a constant 12V power source and the ground lead (black) was spliced to a ground wire. Both wires were on the headlight switch harness (constant 12V – red/white wire, ground – brown wire). Be sure to verify your wire colors for your car. You can also see the circular harness for the headlight switch in the background.

Headlight Switch/Vent Assembly Back in the Dash: This is a shot of the headlight/vent assembly back in the dash with the wires for the new switch hanging out. I decided to keep the excess slack to make future removal of the headlight/vent assembly easier. To reconnect the headlight switch harness, I found it easier to remove the headlight switch form the assembly. To do this, remove the outer switch cap by pulling towards you. Once the cap is off, you will notice a nut. Unscrew the nut and remove the headlight switch. Reconnect the harness and re-install the headlight switch (of course, don’t forget to reconnect the fog light switch harness!).

The Finished Product: Here is the finished product. I soldered the end of the leads to the new switch. I then pushed back the excess wire into the dash and snapped the switch into the fog light switch assembly. Now go play with your garage door opener!

For this the only tool you’ll need is a T-25 Torx screwdriver.

Firstly, slacken all the screws shown in the first picture. Then lifting the air filter cover you will see that the pipe from just above the kidney grill joins this cover and is secured by two little tabs. By lifting the cover at an angle the tabs should release allowing you to remove the cover completely. Note that the screws do not unscrew fully and stay captive within the cover.

You can now see the air filter element. I was surprised to find a cylindrical filter!! In order to remove the air filter element there is a small clip at the front (circled in picture 3 and close up in picture 4). You need to press the circular area on either side and slide the filter forward. It will then come up and away from its mount.

There is an insert within the filter which is fixed and sealed in place.

Put the new filter in the same way the original was removed, replace the cover making sure the tabs lock into the inlet pipe and the screws all line up. Retighten the screws and you’re done!

I would like to share my experience of changing the oil in my 2006 BMW 325i (e90) with sport package. My car has only 2300 miles on it, but I thought I should do a post break-in period oil change. (More on this later.) It took a bit longer than expected (~1 hr) because I didn’t know where everything was, especially the drain bolt. The job itself was simple – something I would do in about 15 minutes next time.

Equipment and Tools:
Rhino Ramp
17mm Socket Wrench
Strap Wrench

Supplies:
BMW Oil Filter ~$15
BMW Synthetic 5W30 Oil, 7 Quarts (6.5 L), ~$5/Quart

Lifting the car:
One of the most difficult parts of my oil change was raising the car. I have a hydraulic jack, but I had two problems. 1) The jack couldn’t slide underneath the lift point, even though I would hardly classify my jack as being high. The clearance under the front of the car was minimal with the sport package. I could slip the jack underneath the rear of the car, but I needed to raise the front. 2) Even if I were to raise the front of the car with my hydraulic jack, there weren’t any lift points where I could place my jack stands.

Frustrated, I went to buy some Rhino ramps. Unfortunately, the Rhino ramps had their own problems. While fellow forum member HRC didn’t have a problem (HRC, do you have a non-sport package e90?), I had a problem with the ramps slipping on my concrete garage floor. The culprit turned out to be the low hanging rubber flaps just ahead of the front wheels as shown below:

While the flaps are flexible, they scrape the ramps enough to push them forward. This was quite frustrating. I finally solved the problem by putting the ramps on top of rubber floor mats I had lying around. They provided enough friction to prevent the ramps from slipping.

Removing the oil cap and filter:
Removing the oil cap was simple. Just turn the square cap clockwise and you’re done.

Removing the oil filter was simple, too. I couldn’t turn the oil filter cap by hand, so I used a strap wrench. The exposed filter element is shown below:

Removing the drain bolt:
This took much longer than anticipated, simply because I didn’t know where it was located. The first thing you notice looking underneath the car is that plastic shields cover nearly the entire underside. Conspicuously, there is a large exposed bolt right where you think the middle of the engine is.

I don’t know what this bolt is for, but IT IS NOT THE DRAIN BOLT. Fortunately, I didn’t loosen it because of heads up by fellow forum member HRC. BMW, in its infinite wisdom, made this bolt 17mm in size, same as the drain bolt. So if you’re looking for something that fits a 17mm socket in search of a drain bolt, this is it. However, don’t remove it.

Even after some search, I still couldn’t locate the drain plug. I was in the process of removing the bolts securing the plastic shield underneath the engine (while cursing BMW and their poor design), when I came across this trap door just behind the bolt.

When I opened it – Eureka! – I found the drain bolt!

From here on, it was easy. Loosen the bolt and drain the oil into a pan. About 7 quarts (6.5 L) will drain out.

Replacing the Filter:
Let the oil drain for a few minutes. Meanwhile, you can replace the oil filter. The old oil filter next to the new filter is shown below.

Inside the filter box, there should be two rubber O-rings (small and large) and one copper crush washer.

Remove the two O-rings and the filter from the filter housing, and insert the new ones. It’s a little tricky removing the O-rings, but don’t use a screwdriver since it can damage the housing. The new assembled filter housing should look like this:

Putting it back together:
Screw the oil filter cap back on. Be sure the rubber O-rings, especially the large one, are in their correct grooves. I accidentally placed the large one inside a wrong groove once, and oil started gushing out of the housing.

Go underneath the car again, and screw the drain bolt back in. Make sure you pry off the old crush washer, and use the new copper crush washer. Secure the trap door.

Finally, put ~6.9 quarts of BMW Synthetic 5W30 oil in.

Once finished, secure the oil cap.

Start the engine and check for any leaks. Drive off the ramp and drive for a few miles because the on-board computer needs a few minutes to get an accurate reading of the oil level. Check the oil level through the on-board computer, and top off as needed.

You’re done! Simple!

Postscript:
Again, it should only take ~15 minutes to change the oil once you get the car on the ramps. It is a very simple procedure.

Now, the question of whether it was necessary to do a post break-in oil change: I’m going to be somewhat diplomatic. Quite frankly, the used oil appeared to be pretty clean (I did not see any metal shavings nor notice significant change in its viscosity). In my professional judgment (Ph. D. in engineering), I would say that my oil change at 2300 miles was overkill. The evidence isn’t convincing enough to support the need for one. However, in my personal judgment (a person who is obsessive about his new car and wants it to last forever – and quite frankly, who isn’t on this board?), it was worth the reassurance that there won’t be a nagging question in the back of my mind always wondering whether I should’ve changed the oil after the initial break-in period. Would I again change the oil after my break-in period, given what I now know about the state of the oil after 2300 miles? Absolutely! You can’t always be rational about a car – otherwise we would all be driving Toyotas.

Difficulty scale: Adding air to your tires is level one
Rebuilding a BMW Motor is level ten

In this continuing series of maintenance article for the BMW E30 3 Series models, we will focus on changing the differential oil. This article is written with the 325is model in mind, however this article applies to all BMW’s in general.

Why change the differential oil? The differential is just like any other mechanism with moving parts. It generates heat and friction while in operation. Just like an engine, regular oil changes help to keep parts such as gears well lubricated and clean. Over time, the differential wears just like any other component. The differences between the differential and an engine is that the differential has no internal filter to capture small particles of metal as the gears wear. Also, the differential uses oil that is much thicker than engine oil. Usually differential oil is good for up to 80,000 miles without changing. However it is commonly overlooked in the wide spectrum of vehicle maintenance. Failure to change the fluid at regular intervals can cause a variety of problems, eventually causing the bearings in the diff to fail. In this article I will go over the simple steps to changing the oil yourself and avoid a costly trip to your mechanic for something you can do in under an hour in your driveway.

First, drive the car around the block a few times to get the oil inside the differential warmed up,

Now, let’s jack the car up. First, chock the front wheels to keep them from rolling while you have the rear wheels jacked up. Be sure to jack the car up on a re-inforced part of the body, such as a crossmember or chassis beam. Be sure not to jack the car up on any other part, as you could put a hole right through the bottom of the car. I have seen Porsches in the past where jacks have punctured the floorboards. A handy reference is Wayne’s article on jacking up your BMW.

http://www.doyourself.org/car-maintenance/643-e36-jacking-up/

Now jack up the front wheels of the car as well. We will want to get the car as level as possible in order to drain all the old fluid out of the differential.

Now crawl under the car and look at the differential. On the very rear of the differential towards the bottom, you will see two 17mm internal Allen head plugs (NOTE: the size can vary with the year and model of your car). These are the drain and filler plugs for the oil. Put a suitable drain tray under the plugs and first open the top plug to relieve any possible vacuum inside the diff and help the oil drain out. Now loosen the lower plug and thread it out by hand. Keep in mind that the old oil will start to flow out as soon as you remove the plug, so make sure the drain pan is directly below. Also, gear oil is some of the worst smelling stuff on earth. If you get any on your clothes, you will never get the smell off again, so be sure to wear your worst work clothes or just work naked! Well, maybe that’s not such a good idea.

Anyway, let the old fluid drain out of the car completely just watch it, it will go from a full stream to a small trickle then it will stop flowing. Once it has stopped, thread the drain plug back in and torque it to 41 ft./lbs. Now, get the new fluid and using a siphon, pump the new fluid into the filer hole at the top. When the fluid begins to flow out of the top hole, it is full. Now re-install the filler plug and torque it to 41 ft./lbs.

Be sure to check your owner’s manual as to what oil to run in the differential. I always use Swepco oil. This stuff is great, it keeps the diff cool, lubricated, and most of all, quiet!

Now lower the car off the jack stands and take your car for a spin to work the new oil into the gears.
