I’ve been burning the candle at both ends. Weekdays I’m up and 6.15 and I usually go to bed between 12-1am – I’m not getting enough sleep. Too much coffee during the day keeps me awake but is giving me a headache by mid-afternoon. At the weekend I still go to bed at the same time and I get up a bit later, 7.30 ish – still not enough sleep.
I have a tight deadline at work – we’ve got an update to our financial system due to go live before 1st November and as usual it’s a race to the line. So I’ve been doing some overtime on that.
Add to that a personal PHP project I’m working on: a social(ish) ranking site that I’m excited about – I’ve been working on that in the evenings too. I’m hoping it’ll be finished in a couple of weeks.
Then of course there are my two blogs – both have been kinda neglected recently but I need to answer emails and reply to comments at the very least.
And finally there’s family time. The most important time of all.
I’ve been reading a lot of self-motivational type blogs recently, sites like Zen Habits and Illuminated mind. They talk often about breaking away from the accepted norm of 9-5 employment, becoming your own boss, having a great work-life balance and just basically doing something a bit different from everyone else and stop working for The Man. They also say that a lot of people aren’t prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to make those steps.
I’m sacrificing sleep right now and I’m not sure I can keep it up. I want to get this PHP project done and released – I see it as a “release early and release often” project. Get enough done to make it usable and see what happens from there. Then I have another idea that could either be monstrously huge or a complete failure and there’s only one way to find out. At the moment I’m kinda beating myself up if I take a night off from the PHP project – I don’t want to take my foot off the pedal and start procrastinating.
I really need to start blogging more on my hearing aids blog too. I haven’t written much on there in the last two months and there’s tons of stuff piled up ready to be written. Luckily, Feedburner count and daily visits don’t seem to be dropping but some fresh content is badly needed.
This has been a rant-post – over and out (I’ve got code to write…)
